Our Paws For Ukraine lorry full of donated animal aid has arrived safely and the team were overwhelmed with the amount we had sent and very thankful. They filmed some of the unloading and thanked us for the items we had sent. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in this including all the collection points, local charities companies who donated, volunteers both human and furry who helped with the packing, moving to storage and palleting up. Of course, none of this would have been possible if Dale Brothers Ltd hadn’t agreed to help us to get the fabulous donations to where needed. An anonymous donor is paying for the lorry, so any money donated was used to purchase items that went on to the lorry before it left. PDM produce stepped in and sorted out the customs clearance and also got 5 pallets of pet food to help fill the lorry. Chris the driver who adopted Chester from us as a kitten 3 years ago, had his friend Greg as copilot on the awesome journey. They were very excited and so pleased they were taking the lorry full of animal aid on it's journey to help the animals of Ukraine. They set off from Hortonwood, Telford on Monday 18 April at 4am and by midday they were through customs and on the French open road. They made great time and delivered the donations of animal aid at 2pm local time to Foundation ADA’s warehouse in Fredropol on Wednesday 20 April. This is an awesome achievement and we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support and donations; whether through dropping them off at collection points, donating money or via the Amazon wish list you all made this possible, thank you.

On Friday 25 March volunteers gathered at our shelter to start packing donations for the Paws For Ukraine lorry. This lorry is taking animal welfare aid to Poland to help Foundation ADA who are rescuing animals from the Ukraine. They have also set up pop up shelters and taken in pets carried over the border by their owners but for different reasons can’t continue on their journey with them, it is hoped they will be reunited as soon as possible. They are also setting up a Traumatised Animal Adaption Centre that will be open for incoming animals 24/7. Volunteers were supervised by our shelter’s free ranger cats. Bertie instantly inspected boxes and food donations until he found a comfy bed to test out where he stayed until it was packed, he of course then moved on to boxes and found the highest vantage point possible. Rudi and Sushi sniffed out items to check they were up to scratch. Flump and Maya investigated and guarded the packed and weighed boxes waiting to be loaded in to vehicles to take to where storing until they go on their long journey. Hector the shelter managers dog decided to assist weighing the boxes and Bertie clearly thought it was weigh in day as he got on a box being weighed. The volunteers worked really hard and we are all so thankful for all the wonderful donations coming in via our Amazon wish list and collection points. Volunteers at Shropshire Cat Rescue have been watching and seeing the pictures of people carrying their pets with them in any way possible and then pictures of those left behind and their brave rescuers has broken their hearts. So a team of volunteers set about to help get animal welfare aid over to where it is needed. We have linked up with Network for Animals who have been working with different groups in Poland on the Ukraine border. On Friday the wonderful Dale Brothers in Telford confirmed they can transport the animal aid to Poland for us. This is further than they normally transport within Europe and we are very grateful they are doing this for us as it is a big ask. Even better news is that a anonymous donor has donated the full cost for transport so any money raised specifically for our Paws for Ukraine project means it will all go on purchasing animal aid items. We posted on our Facebook page on Saturday and the response has been amazing already. One of our volunteers is a veterinary nurse who has a passion for behaviour and had already been trying to include as much stress and anxiety relieving aid as possible. Ceva who make Feliway and Adaptil have offered to donate some of their products to go to help the animals being rescued or carried by their owners out of the Ukraine. Our aid is going to Network for Animals partner in Poland Foundation ADA, they had already been setting up pop up shelters but now are working on a Traumatised Animal Adaption Centre, which will be able to take animals in 24 hours a day. The centre will be hugely important to help those animals traumatised by their experiences. Due to this we are increasing requests for aid donations that can help these animals and give their carers the tools they need to help them. Things like supplements will help but also hides to help cats feel safe, puzzle feeders to help stimulate both cats, dogs and small furries and of course toys. We do not ask for help often, but this year we need as much help as we can get. We rely upon donations and sponsors to keep our shelter going each year and we are currently experiencing a double whammy of demand on our funds. We have a large number of cats that need our help plus the recent storms blew us about quite a bit and the shelter has suffered £’000’s of damage that we need to repair to keep our cats and kittens safe and warm. Pearl came to us in early December. Her elderly owner died and in the aftermath her family and friends all thought that Pearl was being looked after by someone else. This meant that she was left to fend for herself for three months before she was discovered and she came to us severely malnourished, with dreadful matted fur and dental and thyroid problems. After some time at the vets we are now taking good care of Pearl, but she needs ongoing treatment and we have so many other cats and kittens to look after this Christmas. The recent Beco order appears to have been cat burgled, you heard it here first we thought just a Cat Nip Frog had been stolen but the Budgies are now missing. Freddie has checked the box and confirmed the Budgies have gone. Freddie has helped investigate and the last cat seen near the box was seen running off with a frog, further searches are continuing to find the Budgies it is possible they have been stashed away. Freddie has been working hard to help with getting all the new goodies on to the website in time for you all to make some seasonal purchases. Freddie helped in selecting the toys he felt were worthy of being sold to all those young and old cat lovers. Freddie and Gizzmo have tested some of the cat toys and given his paw of approval especially as they are created by a company that has sustainability at its heart. Freddie showed that the natural rubber balls which can hold treats or dry food made for dogs are perfect for the cat in your life too and definitely worthy of a spot on your cats Christmas or Birthday wish list. Freddie helped with his friend Gizzmo with the unpacking and then the picture taking. Of course, Freddie helped upload them too by getting on my lap at any opportunity whilst I uploaded the items onto the website. Any of you who follow Shropshire Cat Rescue on Twitter or Facebook maybe familiar with the online shop helper Freddie, just in case you are not here he is. Freddie is one of our volunteers’ cats and is ever willing to help out by entertaining passers by scaling the roof and often seen curled up on the chimney or fast asleep in the guttering. When not scaling the heights, he also loves to help out when it comes to packaging online shop orders, he ensures that it is done correctly and with his furry paws help. Pippin occasional checks over parcels once they are packaged but Freddie is on hand as soon as he hears the wrapping paper being cut, even if he’s outside he will suddenly appear eager to help. There are a selection of goodies to purchase from magnets created by volunteer Anji using pictures she has taken of the resident cats and those who have found their forever homes. Of course, the Forever homes Calendar is also available from the online shop. It has been a very difficult year for the Shropshire Cat Rescue Shop. The Covid lockdown closures have been the most obvious challenge of course, but before that Shrewsbury suffered severe flooding which affected the numbers of people getting into the town centre. Indeed, it affected some of our volunteers getting to the shop! We have been closed for about 9 months on and off which has clearly had an impact on our fundraising, but our dedicated volunteers have risen to the challenge to try to keep generating funds to help our cats. Carol Beels has been selling donated items on our new and very popular SCR Selling Facebook page. She is so good at it – her next role is selling snow to the Inuit and I have no doubt she will excel at that too! We also had the idea of putting a contact email address in the shop window so people could enquire about any of the items we were showcasing in the window display. This was quite successful because we sold a couple of pictures for nearly £100. Despite the challenges we looked forward to re-opening to our customers. In anticipation of this a few volunteers spent some Sundays getting the shop spic and span again (socially distanced and within Government guidelines of course). The donated items were sorted, and volunteers Peter and Julie Kampler gave some areas a lick of paint. Anne had been keeping up morale with much needed home-made cakes. Obviously, it will be a bit different to normal to begin with. We will only be opening the ground floor to start with, and customer numbers will be limited to ensure a safe environment. We appreciate that some people may still be nervous about entering shops so we will have put baskets of books, DVD’s and CD’s outside the front door. Look out for some real bargains. As always, we are looking for volunteers to pitch in and help out. From door control, working the counter to helping sort out donated items – there is never a shortage of work. We recently helped a kind lady who had discovered some kittens in an outhouse and was keen to get mum trapped and neutered but was concerned for the kittens’ safety. We took in the kittens after she expertly trapped them, and we affectionately named them Frank and Betty. The two tabbies were a little bewildered but old enough to not need mum anymore, so we got working on socialising them – which did not take long for Frank as he decided faster than his sister that we were not too bad! As with most stray/feral kittens, these two came in with terrible ear mites which they patiently let us treat, despite the discomfort it was causing them. They soon blossomed into friendly and very playful little ones and were soon enough adopted and now go by Milo and Maisie. These two and their mother have renewed our desire to invest in new and improved trapping equipment ahead of a busy season. We are thankful to our supporters for helping us to purchase the right traps and baskets that will go on to help the public in trapping cats that need help.
